This is definitely a center cube. Very standard D/T. You should cover next turn for sure, and possibly put another on the roof or POH by shifting. This leads to 1 or 2 men in the air v. a two point board and he has four men back. You only have two men back, are split to his five pt. and will have a solid advantage for years to come here.

As to the 5-3, I agree with what Neil said and what you played. If the 8 pt. wasn't stripped I would have a completely different play [if there were 3 checkers on the 8 pt I'd make a diff. play, if there were 4 checkers on the 8 I'd make a different play from all that! the subtle changes that completely change a position] One play you should also consider here is 8/5 6/1*. I don't think it's right, but worth consideration.
