In Response To: General poker question (OT) (Chuck Bower)

No need for the "OT" Chuck...nothing is OT @ my forums. Nobody is going to complain because they know I won't listen =)

E.g. if after the river you think s/he has four suited cards, the chances of drawing the flush (on two tries) are mid 30's so bet a bit over the current pot size

I figure you meant after the flop or turn? What you said is basically true but most of the problem with that is your opponent doesn't know what odds he should be getting to make the call. You also have to consider what two cards they could be drawing to a flush with, something that is not considered in a lot of the time. EG: You have top QK on a 47Q board, top pair, 2nd best kicker. Two to a flush on that flop ... if you put your opponent on a flush draw it's important to realize if he has AX his aces are outs. Same note, what if he has 56 suited, now his hand is so strong he'll probably let you know it on the flop but always something to keep in mind.

This is very generalized but in limit hold 'em if you think you have the best hand against one opponent you bet. If you can put your opponent on a flush draw it's best to mug them for 2 bets on the turn as if you check they'll almost always bet or if they raised you on the flop they'll almost always bet the turn. When they do you have to have the nuts to trust your instincts and raise them, make them pay the extra bet to chase it down. It gets a lot more complicated against multiple opponents and I won't try to simply here, but if you have top pair and someone bets out you should raise on the spot trying to eliminate the chasers. If someone bet out and there are a couple callers before you, even if you have a great hand like top pair top kicker + position, you just want to call here and see what comes off. No raise in this position in limit poker is going to force anyone out, if anything, all the extra bets in the pot is going to make them chase to the river!

I regret to say I haven't seen any great books on limit hold 'em poker. I've read all of them that looked worthy, and maybe it's because I whoop ass, I turn the pages like "yea... yea... yea....duhh". They're not bad but I never feel anything is enlightening. [they're probably decent books, it's like me listening to Weaver lecturing about the opening moves, the only time something interesting comes up is when we disagree lol]

Also in limit poker it depends what stakes I'm playing/who I'm playing as to what I'll do. There are certain situations in the higher stakes limit, 50/100 & above I'd say, where I'd make a play to elimininate part of the field that I'd never make at the lower stakes. I could ramble on limit play for hours on end ... but I'll give you a reprieve for now.
