Clocks in Charlotte

I agree. Major tournament delays are not the result of individual matches taking an extra 15 minutes. But time can add up. Keep in mind that in a 600 move match, for each extra second of delay time that players use on average, the match takes 10 minutes longer. I do agree completely that if we can eliminate the 4 hour matches, it doesn't matter too much if someone takes 2 1/2 hours instead of 2 hours for a given match. But if the same person extends each of their matches by only 20 minutes, at the end of 3 rounds of play it can be the difference between someone else having to play at 11PM vs. midnight.
I'm not suggesting that anyone rush their play or not spend the time they need to think about difficult plays, counting pips, cube decisions, etc. But while I might be entitled by the rules to sit there during a match with my clock running while I clip and file my fingernails, it is not enjoyable for my opponent or the spectators, so I don't do it. Consistently thinking longer for the same play when playing on a clock than when off a clock "just because you are entitled to" is no less boring to those others around the board. Saying nobody has a right to complain about the pace of play if a clock is in use is like saying nobody can complain about the bozo doing the speed limit in the left lane of the highway when fhe flow of traffic is 20% faster. Clocks should make the game more enjoyable for all to play and watch. I would hate to see it have the reverse effect. Ever.
