I always thought that a small disadvantage was enough to make using the free drop correct.

I think it's better to say "Being slightly worse off than in the initial position is enough to make using the free drop correct."

Reducing gammon losses from 13.5% to 0% is very good for the trailer. Reducing wins from 50% to 34.5% is very bad. It turns out both together are just a bit bad.
