If the gammons are about the same as the opening position then what is just barely a drop at 2a - 1a would be a take at 4a - 1a. Saving the drop for later is worth something.

For a high enough whole number N it would actually be true that at 2N away 1 away you should only use the free drop if your opponent started the game with a 31 and you had the worst response.
