Due to a tremdous difference in cube power the difference between 3a 2a and 2a 2a is less than one might think. This causes the gammonless takepont at 2a 4a to be a lot lower than many who haven't done the calculations would guess.

This is a tough choice. You have no immediate shots and opponent must give something next turn. The spares on the 6 point give you some time. But if you are not able to attack a blot left on the fleeing 18 point you are depending on doubles to clear.

A good variation for opponent is that he flees with one checker from the 18 point. You don't hit it and he flees the other one next turn. You leave a direct shot. He needs to hit it and win from there. I think the bad variations where a shot is hit (with some gammons) or a good double is rolled are just enough to make it a pass.
