As I see it the main explanations are that when the slot is missed, you rate to make the 5point which will win you a lot of games. When the slot is hit, having the 3rd man back will make it a lot easier to build an advanced anchor. Finally, not giving up the 24 point ensures that you're not run over by a 55 blitz or similar things.
