For instance, a 6 percent G.W.C. error indicates that the coach’s actual choice would, on average, cost the team 6 victories of each 100 games played. Or, more telling, a single 6 percent error during each game of a season should cost a team about one game, no small number.

I'm curious, does your math take into account playoff qualification tiebreakers? My beloved Pats (I lived in the Boston area most of my life, mostly excepting the past 5 years) finished the regular season 11-5, not advancing to the playoffs due to tiebreakers.

I apologize if my thinking is fuzzy here, I am having trouble wrapping my mind around the effect, or lack thereof, of double counting division games and conference games.

On another topic, does Zeus have an opinion on the following suggestion of mine for changing NFL rules? Namely, if the game is tied at the end of the fourth quarter, what would the effect be of having the possession rules of the beginning of the 2nd and 4th quarter instead of having OT start with the same rules as the beginning of the 1st quarter, i.e. a coin flip.

For example, assume the score is 24-24 at the end of the fourth quarter, and the Patriots receive the ball from the Colts with 5 seconds left in the 4th quarter. If the pats can't score a touchdown on the kickoff, then the game ultimately comes down mostly to luck, i.e. whoever wins the coin toss usually wins. But if the Pats in my example start OT with the ball from perhaps the 27 yard line after receiving the kickoff, then they get possession on the 27 yard line just like they would at the end of the 1st or 3rd quarter.

The net effect would be to eliminate the luck factor of the coin toss, with presumably the better team winning far more often than as under current rules.

Partially off topic, I somewhat selfishly favor adding one or two more playoff spots per conference. Needless to say this would've benefited my Patriots this year, although it would also have eliminated their byes in recent years too. It would also raise more revenues for the teams and league, without extending the number of weeks needed to finish the playoffs.
