In Response To: OT sickening officiating (Bob Koca)

Guess we should get a rule book and review it.

The definition of a "post-possession foul" would be of interest.

The Cardinal player stumbles in an attempt to block a field goal and runs over the holder -- a personal foul, no doubt; not intentional, no doubt. The kick had already been made. Whether the kick was good or not, the ball would belong to the Cardinals -- at the spot or via a kickoff. Yet this is not post-possession, half the distance to the goal, Steelers get a new set of downs to attempt a touchdown.

The Steeler player mugs a Cardinal player during a Cardinal punt. The Cardinal was on the ground on all fours. The Steeler slugs him several times, body slams him to the ground, and slugs him some more. Personal foul, you bet. Intentional, you bet. And this time the refs did see the foul, they threw a flag -- yet no ejection? another story. The punt had been made and was in the air. "Post possession"? Maybe. A Steeler could have touched the ball, without ever 'possessing' the ball, and the Cardinals could have recovered. Doesn't quite seem, in my opinion, like "post possession" in the same sense as the field goal try. But, Steelers retain the ball and are penalized one foot (half the distance to the goal) for Harrison's purposeful and brutal assault of a Cardinal player.

So, you be the judge.

Regarding the NFL saying the reviewed the last Cardinal play. Perhaps. As I said, I thought it was a fumble. However, I also thought the earlier challenge/review of an almost identical play where the refs had ruled a fumble by Warner would be upheld by replay. After a number of minutes, it was reversed and ruled an incompletion. Just give me some consistency or, in the least, the appearance of consistency.

Another call I thought interesting was the facemask call against the Cardinals while pushing Santonio Holmes out of bounds -- probably third quarter, I think same series as the phantom roughing the passer call. Now I have always thought neither team -- offense or defense -- could use the facemask of an opposing player in any manner -- and I'm fairly certain I've seen it called before on either side, though far more predominantly against the defense in tackling. On this play, the two players run for a good ten yards with Holmes' stiff-arm against the Cardinal firmly anchored against the face mask and then the Cardinal's hand slides across the Steelers' facemask -- without grasping, without pulling -- and he gets fifteen yards? Again, just give me some consistency.
