Of course we can only speculate, devious schemes are not publicized. Bob, even you must give the NFL more credit than that.

However, I think one could consider the following recipe: a cup of hope for the perennial under-performing franchises; mix in a half-cup of consideration for the fastest growing -- read fan base and market share -- area of the country (the southwest); add three helping teaspoons of Cinderella with the Cardinals and Kurt Warner; stir in a couple of dashes of anti-Steeler, anti-NFL-establishment spices; let the country anticipate and stew on the recipe for a couple of weeks; then bake with a slowly increasing heat and fervor, reaching a maximum level of intensity after about 57.5 minutes of game clock. Ensure the table is set and all the diners primed with all the beer, wine, and liquor they can drink in the preceding three hours. Make sure the smell and taste of victory is savored by the masses. Then jerk open the oven door and drop the nasty concoction on the dirty kitchen floor in front of everyone's eyes just as they're ready to dive in and revel.

Wow, imagine that. Oh, so close for the Cardinals -- their fans, the Underdog/Cinderella supporters, the Southwest US, the disenfranchised (teams, fans, cities, etc.) -- and all can imagine how easily it could have been them. And, alas, justice and logic prevail for the NFL, the Steelers, and the other elite NFL teams and fans -- just as it should be. A hint of failure to scare them and make them appreciate the victory, but all remains right with the world.

The successful, most profitable formula of the prior three or four NFL decades remains unchanged -- ready for yet another sequel, re-run, or encore (use the word you wish) next year.

No sense in rocking a stable, money-making boat.

Not much of a dynamite marketing game for television though. Better assume next year you'll again see two teams from the major markets and/or the elite franchises. Maybe in 3-4-5 years you may see another bone thrown to the masses.
