With the 52, bringing two down aims to embark on a priming game, which would be to White's advantage now that Blue has gone deep, but getting hit is now worse because Blue has two points instead of one. I think it's correct to split. The downside is that it encourages Blue's attack; the upside is that if White can grab an advanced anchor it neutralises Blue's best gameplan.
