The cost of hotel stays here in the US, at least from what I've observed, over the past 10 years has gone up more than the average rate of inflation and the average rate of increases in peoples' incomes. Maybe someone has stats to support my experiences or to prove me wrong.

Therefore, the cost of hotel stays would seem to be a greater portion of one's income than it was a decade or more ago.

In most cases, tourney entry fees have only increased a little bit, if at all over the past decade. What that means is that hotel costs have also become a greater percentage of a player's costs to attend a tourney. If we could raise entry fees to keep up, then hotel costs would be a smaller percentage, however the overall increase in costs would keep players away or force them to a less pricey division. By having side pools, we cater to those who want to risk more money on the event to get a better return if they do well.

In most cases, many directors have done a good job of getting reduced hotel rates for players. Getting the hotel to toss in coupons for reduced meal costs is also a help and also good for the hotel so more players eat there and perhaps realize the the hotel has good food.
