In Response To: rollout (aoleg1)

But I like 6/4* 6/3*. It seems that 6/4*/1* is too commital to race (if a blot on 1st point is not hitted back). 3 and 4 points are better places for those checkers than 6 and 1!

(1) When ahead in the race, race. Blue is way ahead in the race. 16/11 leaves 12 shots at the 11-point blot, plus other good numbers elsewhere, and gains no tempo. The double hit is strong by comparison. Note that the second-best rolled-out play is 6/3*/1* which like 6/4*/1* leaves only a single direct shot and gains two tempi, but doesn't push White quite as far back.

(2) Magriel's safe-vs-bold criteria call for a safe play (Blue has a worse board than White, and fewer checkers back). 16/13 8/6 is too ugly: stripping the 8 point and overstacking the 6 point cause too much of a playability problem. 16/11 is not very safe at all. Double-hitting and leaving a single direct shot is safer than double-hitting into a double direct shot--although double-hitting is clearly the way to go, consistent with the fact that the rollout puts 6/3* 6/4* is in the ballpark.

All three double hits are tactically strong, but Magriel's criteria break the tie.
