I'm with Bob Koca all the way on these... the guy didn't lose because of THIS play... he loses because he took too much time and ran his clock all the way to zero.

This is really fundamentally different from a situation where my opponent, in a bearoff, accidentally places his own checker on the bar. There was much discussion recently about a play like that involving neilkaz, who didn't insist that it stay there.

The difference is that in the clock situation, the end is the straw the broke the camel's back, whereas with the checker on the bar, it was one unfortunate and inadvertent play.

The punishment in the case we're discussing here really DOES fit the crime -- the crime of having let your clock run all the way down.
