Bill Davis on Time Clock Alarms

What Bill says is true. But...
By the same logic one could argue against the use of scoreboards. I find that having the score prominently displayed next to the board helps to ensure that I remain better aware of the score during play, don't misread my handwriting, don't look at the wrong scoresheet amongst all the papers on the table, don't accidentally write down and play with the wrong score because the scoreboard provides a clear and automatic verification mechanism etc. While fair for both players here, other players in the room may not have the advantage of that aid. Like the scoreboard, the beep does not convey any additional information to the players that is not already at their disposal. Like the scoreboard, it simply makes it more likely that they will be properly aware of the already available information.
And what is the spirit of using clocks? To ensure a reasonable pace of play? Or to give players a way to lose on a technicality? Sure, a loss on time is the player's fault. But does anyone really want to win on time? Or do they just not want to be bored and then playing at 3 AM.
