I'm pretty sure Neil is thinking that gnu liked 5/4(2)* instead of 3/2(2)*.

I suspect that Rich Munitz is correct, it looks like it might be a "zugzwang" play, where putting only one white checker on the bar forces white to play the other die, often giving blue a chance to either hit or a safe place to land, depending on where white plays his "other" die.
