I didn't play Al though I know his victims also included Michael Edge and Gary Bauer.

I've always maintained that it is extremely difficult to play such players. Against a competent Open level player I generally have a good idea of what to anticipate and how they are going to play, react, etc. to most all checker and cube play decisions. Against an inexperienced or less skillful player one has no idea what they're going to do next and, consequently, your whole skill and experience database is disrupted.

I, also, watched the Al Faller/Ray Fogerlund match and it was truly entertaining. My only fear was -- despite rooting for Ray since we were Calcutta team partners -- that Ray would fall victim to Al (as did Stick, Perry, Culpepper, Edge, Bauer, etal) and have a stroke or aneurysm and/or be arrested for assault on his birthday.
