I'd be interested in seeing a discussion, particularly interested in hearing from those who played Al, on the strategy of playing this kind of player. I don't think his result can be completely explained by luck.

Apparently the statistician in Chuck is dead, because not everyone can win a few matches in a row entirely due to luck.

Bill: I've always maintained that it is extremely difficult to play such players.

I will say that adjusting for skill decisions in matches is difficult and probably the most poorly understood area of BG, no bots, no ROs, etc. Most people (probably including myself) tend to overdo it, it's usually only for the borderline decisions or extreme cases that you should adjust your play. But I have as good a record against strong players as anyone and a much poorer record against weaker players, and if you asked me who I wanted in the finals I'd take the player with the higher ER 11 times out of 10.
