calling all philosophers

I like "ethics" over "etiquette". And "sportsmanship" is somewhere in the middle.
These is a difference between "bad manners" and "doing something that's just plain wrong".
It is improper etiquette to tap your fingers on the table while your opponent is thinking. It is bad sportsmanship to accept a resignation in a 2 roll bearoff because your opponent thought he had 5 checkers instead of 4. It is unethical to knowingly make an illegal play.
I think that it is clearly bad sportsmanship to see your opponent's clock running when the clocks should be centered or yours should be running, and not take action to correct the situation. But is it unethical? I think these various guidelines straddle the fence. For example, I think after your opponent takes a double and forgets to hit the clock, I think it would be unethical knowing this to roll your dice and play on the opponent's time. But it would simply be bad sportsmanship to sit there silently doing nothing waiting for the opponent to notice his clock is still running.
So in general, I'd rather take the stronger position and call this "ethics" since I believe some of it does cross that line.
