clock "ETHICS"

"I don't see a difference in ethics quite frankly. "
Let me help you see the difference
You double, hit your clock, your opponent takes, forgets to hit his clock and you notice the oversight.
Do you:
1) Say "Hit your clock so I can roll"? (Good sportsmanship.)
2) Sit there and stare into space as long as you possibly can, perhaps even start talking to your friend about dinner plans as your opponent's clock runs down. (Bad sportsmanship.)
3) Roll and play on your opponent's clock time, obviously using the opportunity to count pips, do some match equity calculations, spend a good 5 minute of your opponent's time in the process. (Unethical)
Of course there are ethics involved.
To me, the idea that I could deliberately try to increase my chances of winning a match on time by employing technique 2 or 3 rather than by playing good backgammon is revolting. I'll let others wrestle with the moral dilema on their own. But I'd rather see guidelines that explicitly say "its wrong" and then if people choose to do it anyway, shame on them, then leave people without guidance and have them rationalize bad sportsmanship.
What if your opponent drops a $100 bill on the floor and doesn't notice and you can pick it up and pocket it without being seen? Their screw-up right? There's certainly a chance they'd do exactly the same thing if the situations were reversed. Nevertheless, unethical. Stealing time is no different. Time is money.
