I happen to believe that legal moves should be required in backgammon. However the rules are explicit about the handling of an illegal play and in effect codify that condoning an illegal play is perfectly acceptable. There is no moral dilema there.

The clock rules do not state "if your opponent's clock is still running and he has clearly made an oversight in not hitting or centering it, it is perfectly fine to say nothing and allow his time to drain down to zero". Doing so in absense of the rules saying it is ok IS a moral dilema. I personally choose to not try to win that way. I think we should set expectations for others to think of it in the same manner.

Clocks in backgammon should be a tool to reduce delays and any action or inaction to deliberately increase the amount of time spent on a match goes against the spirit of clock usage.
