I also appreciate your position regarding responsibility. However, if we all view the first priority of clock usage to be "reducing delay" and a lower priority to be "punishing the opponent for screwing up", the right thing to do is quite clear in all these cases. Pat's write-up states this ordering of priorities so that people do not need to guess which of these competing interests is more important, and I agree with it.

The one case where it is not - punching the clock on auto-pilot after a closed board is opened - I've addressed in a separate thread why I believe that letting that action stand is not a judgment call but rather a violation of the rules.
