In this introductory period of clocks I don't care whether you employ "ethics", "etiquette", "sportsmanship", or some other term. For me it's common sense. I want clocks introduced and mandated to move the game along in many realms, from ease of ruling to speeding along tournaments to the professionalism they promote in the eyes of the layman spectator. At a much later time when clocks are used at basically all tournaments I may listen to the arguments for allowing your opponent's time to run when they've clearly accepted the cube or doubled and simply forgot to punch their clock instead of telling them. Or, passing their turn when they should have rolled because they have been on the bar for 15 minutes and are on autopilot. I doubt my stance will change as I'm an advocate of legal moves also but I will listen then, for now though I think Patrick's suggested "ethics" are spot on.
I don't like comparisons such as arguing passing one's turn by being on autopilot being impossible as if there's nothing else in the rules that's impossible, such as putting yourself on the bar and that play standing. Both are crap and I think they're cheap shots and nothing more if someone lets such things stand.
As JLee mentioned, it only makes sense that the player who had the last action to perform is responsible for centering the clocks, he has to hit his clock for his turn to be over! Also, it doesn't really matter except possibly in doubles if a couple of extra ticks go one way or the other on someone's delay at the end of a game. When dice are rolled to start the next game, who have you ever seen go into reserve time on an opening roll? lol I don't even hit my clock when my opponent wins the opening roll, it's a waste of energy, I'll let him start after he's made his move.
