In Response To: clock "ETHICS" (Rich Munitz)

Rich: To me, the idea that I could deliberately try to increase my chances of winning a match on time by employing technique 2 or 3 rather than by playing good backgammon is revolting. I'll let others wrestle with the moral dilema on their own. But I'd rather see guidelines that explicitly say "its wrong" and then if people choose to do it anyway, shame on them, then leave people without guidance and have them rationalize bad sportsmanship.

I kind of like this view, and I wish more people were like that. Backgammon players, even some of the great ones tend to be penny ante hustlers. Guys who found out that they were smart enough they could make a few bucks plundering pigeons at a game... and so they go on living barely above the poverty level preying on the weak. Not paying taxes or contributing to society, in short: not working. This type of person and others will take advantage of any system that is put in place. Oh, I didn't NOTICE his clock was running while I was consdiering my redouble!

Anyway, well put Rich. We ought to make it bad form not to clue the guy in and get on with the match I suppose. It won't stop the cotroversies or angle shooting, but it does provide a high road that most of us will take, I think.
