I had the same exact problem start happening a couple of days ago. Also XP. IE 6.0.

My browser (IE 6.0) crashed with a fatal error message box and closed up. From that point onward, none of my BGO settings are remembered, even if I change them. I can't clear any of the NEW indicators by clicking on "Mark All Messages Read".
