There is indeed contact gained when white rolls 54 or 64 and can no longer run from the rear anchor and leave just a single direct shot.

And while double 4s is obviously a good roll for white, there are 5 immediate returns that would not have otherwise existed, and ongoing shot jeapordy from the checker sent to the roof. Double 1s also a good roll, but same thing - 1 immediate shot and if both checkers enter quickly on the 3 point board, white will have significant difficulty scrambling those 4 checkers home.

That said, having gone through the rolls I agree that the contact is probably not really increased by volunteering. But volunteering doesn't seem to really hurt either. So if we get a shot and miss, we'll be compelled to volunteer or bust the board next turn, so there is value in the race to going now. In the end, maintaining the board is the deciding factor.
