I think it's a fascinating format, and hard to object to since the real alternative is to not invite the last 4 teams at all. The obvious constraint on the format is that since all games are played in the same arena (Madison Square Garden), you can't have a "Round of 16" unless you spread it out over two days which would be silly.

The format is to the Big East's advantage because it allows them to sell tickets for more games (and to fans of more teams), but it's to their disadvantage because you'll get more teams in the NCAA tournament, over the long haul, if you have a tournament format that favors underdogs.
