a lesson i learned (for myself at least) is always play against the best competition possible. you may get your head handed to you, but you are WAY MORE likely to learn something. esp if you ask your opponents why they did what they did. and cultivating a more experienced partner that can explain why we got a bad result is also important. the thrill of winning just isn't that much when you consider the opps.

the 1st bridge tournament i attended (i'd been playing duplicate for a couple months), wouldn't allow me to play in the masters pairs really ticked me off.

i went to the indy tournament a few years ago and played intermediate --- the people played terrible, but luck bagged me so badly that i vowed never to play intermediate again.
