comment on Nactation

This is addressed to everyone, not just Chuck.
I would like to point out that Nackgammon requires the use of more Nactation sysmbols than Backgammon would require. For example Q (quadruple split) is very unlikely to be used in Backgammon. For those who like the ease of Nactation and do not have the desire to learn everything, the small number of basic symbols will suffice for most Backgammon moves in the opening for several moves into the game. For those who haven't jumped into Nactation yet, I would advise learning the basics and only adding additional symbols as curiosity requires.
If you learn the following basic symbols, you will be able to use and follow the great majority of Nactation in the opening.
S (Split) P (Point) $ (Slot) D (Down) R (Run)
The reverse split - Z is common enough that I like to add it to the basic list above. Learn Z too. (e.g. 32Z on the opening move is 24-22, 13-10 reversing the major split 32S, 24-21, 13-11.)
The use of this basic list is entirely common sense and requires almost no effort at all to use.
After learning this list, I recommend ignoring Nactation for doubles and everything else until you find you want to use a symbol you don't know. Then look it up, ask or guess and someone will correct you. I stuck with the basic six until I got spoiled by the system's ease and started adding other symbols one by one. When you do it this way, it is a joy, not something else one is forced to learn. There's no reason to worry about the rare move which takes some thought to find the best Nactation when you are learning the system. The old fashion notation will work for those moves.
Stick - please interject if you think any redirection to my sugestion is required.
