I couldn't agree more, learn the basic symbols first and they'll help you communicate and follow along on the forums a lot easier. After that add as wanted and it's quite simple to tack on a symbol or two here and there and understand what they mean and when to use them. I love nactation if I haven't made that overtly clear - it simplifies a lot, permits easier lines of communication, and staves off my carpel tunnel perhaps a few more years.
I recommend roughly the same things to people who are learning to play the opening replies. They ask "How can I memorize all that stuff!? It's too much." Again, start with the basics and work your way through. Nobody plays anything but 31P so go through all those ROs and see what the correct responses are noting what you currently may have not understood or played correctly. After you feel you've solidified them into your memory move on to 42 as everyone also plays 42P, then 53P, then 65R, then 61P. These are all the easy ones and then you can branch out into the more difficult ones either slowly or as they come up, whatever suits your fancy.
In an ideal world you wouldn't be memorizing them but understanding the reasoning behind why one play is correct and another isn't but some may want to brute force their openings and in that case I suggest the above.
