How do you get 5 for Blue's wastage?

15 checkers spread out over the 4, 5, 6 points waste a little over 7 pips. The wastage decreases with the number of checkers, down to a little over 5 with 3 or 4 checker left. I used 5, but it's probably a little more than that (empty 6pt), which would have gotten me a bit closer to the posted figure of 12%.

The main problem I have with using EPC's is that I find it hard to get wastage numbers when one side isn't either completely stacked or completely smooth.

I've had success applying Keith Count wastage adjustments to epc--adding 2 pips for each checker more than 1 on the 1pt; 1 pip for each checker more than 1 on the 2pt, etc. Then I switch back to epc, adding 7 pips for wastage in an average position and figuring the point of last take. Like most methods, this starts to break down as the race gets shorter, so I spent a couple of hours shuffling checkers around in gnu to get a feel for how adjustments affect epc in the end game. It's a developing skill, but I can usually get pretty close--and pretty close is usually close enough.
