Is celebrating rude?

In Response To: Is celebrating rude? (David)

I didn't hear your kid yell *yes* after your win but I was later told by someone else that *they* usually do. The reason I didn't hear it was probably because your *YES!* was deafening lol. I did not bring up the subject with this person, they brought it up with me.

I wouldn't have bothered with it but since you brought it up I'll give you my thoughts. What David Rockwell expressed is a good start, but I'm willing to take it one step further. Imagine your kid was playing another kid and the other kid upon winning acted how you did, what do you think of the other kid's behavior?

I think minor details are what can make or break a story, so I'll include a few more details. This was a relatively long match, took 15 games for David to win, but it wasn't exactly close at the end. He was winning 12-7 Crawford and then 12-8 post Crawford. He won the 12-8 game. I only point this out because it wasn't a dmp game, it wasn't some bearoff where he rolled a joker to win the game. It was a pretty standard game where we got into a race and he was in the lead the entire time.

I point this out because I could be more empathetic if it was a dmp joker to win the match, like Sax v. Rod in the finals, where Steve rolled boxes to win it. (he didn't need boxes, but he was definitely behind and that was a monster swing)

I know you didn't mean anything by it but I will call out what I consider Peter Pan style "poor form". You should try not to complain (ever) but it gets the best of us as bg can be a very frustrating game. There are times when minor bitching is understood and maybe it helps you feel better. I get down about the game when things seem to be going like shit just like the next guy, but I try not to express my poor form anymore whenever possible.

Truth is, nobody wants to hear about your bad beats in poker, nobody is really listening when you say "blah blah blah" about your latest backgammon miracle loss. Anyway, getting off topic, I was up 7-5 in the middle of the match and lost the next five games to get down -6 -1 so upon me squeezing out the Crawford game which got you a bit grumpy and then you complaining in the post Crawford -5 -1 game when you're still clearly winning wears on my nerves. I know you meant nothing by it, I know you want to win as much as the next guy, but remember the next guy is sitting in front of you and anything that may be considered *obnoxious* celebrating might push his buttons wrong.

Another aspect I think that has went unrecognized is you're celebrating in someone's face in backgammon, whether you mean to or not. It's not a team sport where you celebrate with your teammates, it's not even pro singles tennis where you toss your racket in the air and celebrate with the crowd, you're right there within' feet of your opponent who is already feeling the wide variety of emotions every defeated opponent does in backgammon.
