I've found that if you tell them what you want and not listen to their puny offers, you're much more likely to get what you want.

OK, semi-hypothetically, let's say you have a flight that seats 200 and there are 201 people booked, all of whom adamantly refuse to give up their seats. The airline says, "$200 voucher. $300 voucher. $600 voucher. Nobody? OK, fine, we're selecting somebody at random, for whom we offer nothing. How's that $200 voucher sound now?"

Does that happen?
