David says: By way, I do not think slow play is the biggest culprit in delaying a tournament. I think individuals entering multiple events, and poor pairing decisions by the Director are more to blame for tournaments falling behind schedule.
Frank .. In addition to this, how about the one or two players whose playing style antics is a big part of slow play. A prime example was some years ago I was watching a match against two open players at Novi. I do not have to call this player out by name thinking everybody will immediately know who I am talking about. Before every shake of the dice, and I do mean every shake, this player had to rearrange the wine glasses next to the board, take a drink of wine, make sure the checkers were straight on the board, look arond the room, move his score sheet, etc etc, then roll.
I recall Jake saying, (paraphrased) "If I have to play ___ I am requesting the match be clocked".
How about two years ago there were two open players that was notorious slow in play. One match they had to play each other causing the whole bracket to be backed up much further than it should ever have been allowed. This type of slow play is considerably worse than taking a moment to think through a play as David suggests.
A good friend of mine says, "Don't impress me with your fast play when you make blunder after blunder. Better to slow down a bit and think it through and improve your game".
