Rollout

I am glad that I took this, but to be honest I didn't really want to too much. This position resulted when my blitz went south as a result of 44 from the bar by Stick, which entered two checkers hitting the slotted 4 point and possibly made a point on his side of the board...
Stick: The good part of this that people ignore, don't grasp, w/e, is that even after I make my super blunder and the person correctly takes, so fuckin' what?
Ray's free lesson of today:
Here is "so fucking what": I push people around with this kind of double all the time and that is how I steal matches and ABT points and money year in and year out. They all think, like I did here, that this position isn't so hot, and some of them decide... Jeez, he thought about this for awhile and sent it over and they give me, (and I did you too), credit for knowing what the hell I am doing... and IF I have given sufficient pause for thought and allowed their imaginations to take them on a little ride... They reluctantly give up based on my reputation, their fear, or whatever excuse they just came up with... and then they proceed to EXPLAIN it to me so I will give them some positive reinforcement like: Yeah man, can't take THAT one! So that they can justify their meager existence in their minds!
HOWEVER, since I know I am not going to push you, or Neil, or Petko off this game with a bulldozer, umm, the bluff is unlikely to work and so I don't use it against any of you. I think you said during the match, Stick, and it might have been earlier in THIS game when I doubled initially, that "it must suck not to have any bluff equity". Well you were right about that, and that comment was a clever way to tell me NOT to double cuz you were taking, which is designed to make the faint of heart reconsider and not double a blitzy position you ARE going to take despite the nausea it may cause at this score...
You have ALL the moves, man!
But the real beauty of bluffing in backgammon is that you get to choose your victims! Poker is an incomplete information game so more bluffing is in order, but backgammon is complete information and so you have to have a psychological edge, developed through posture, reputation, table presence, or recent results/history to pull it off. Mostly though, it just works vs. those with a weak constitution.
You knew better, so you don't get any bonus points here.
What is really excellent about backgammon, I find, is that occaisionally you go up against another player who is on a higher plane of thinking than the average Joe. This is exactly what happened in this particular match. It had some extra gravity added because the winner would earn money and ABT points, and there were a number of interested observers not the least of which were our respective calcutta owners.
In the end I let mine down because after getting lucky to hit a shot and then timing my redouble to 8 perfectly, I made a truly pedestrian blunder in the bearoff, sigh. For once, justice was served because you won the match because of my blunder. If I had made the right play, you would have fanned with the dice rolled and I would have won 8 points and taken a 9-5/11 lead in our match... and the spectators would have enjoyed even more of a show.
It was great fun for everyone involved, except me ultimately but I made a mistake so I deserved to lose. This was our third 8 cube together, and you won two of the others. I can't wait for the next one, it's my turn to win!
Well done despite this fishy redouble, Stick.
