Forceful doubles.

NEIL: My opp then shoved the cube right back at me! I looked at him, and he said," How would you like me to cube you like that?". Hmmm...it took me about 2 seconds to realize that he was correct...and I appologized, while stating that this was very rude of me.
Two things on this subject...
Firstly, I seem to have better luck with the pause to consider double... In poker weak means strong and strong means weak, so someone might figure that out and take because you are acting "strong" but it's funny when you can get away with acting strong and get someone to pass. Still, it is not my style, and Neil was extra gentlemanly to apologize. I have seen him toss 4 cubes with a twist and thought it was for effect, mostly. Anyway, I pause and consider... then I gently turn the cube over and set it perfectly symmetrically in the middle of the board someplace, no facial expression change. My opponents have had time to consider and OVERCOME their initial reaction, (which would be to take, I assume), but they let their imagination get the best of them and they pass. I wonder why they do that???
My hesitation to think indicates lack of conviction to me, so it must be a take, I would think! But over the last few years I think my results have created a "force field" or something... and nobody wants to get caught in one of my patented and diabolical TRAPS. Hahaha, how great is the psyche of the human mind??? What a wonderful perk. Try the pause and consider double or redouble and see what happens.
Secondly, I never saw Rod CoVLin before the last couple years I don't think and I have played him 4 times recently. I noticed that when he doubles or redoubles he puts an exaggerated twist on the cube as he sets it down. My reaction to that is like the one Neil's opponent had in this example, though I internalized it so I did not seem phased OTB. But it pissed me off somehow. Where does THIS guy get off with that kind of an attitude, I wondered? Additionally, when I would stop to do my pause and consider cube,(I do that always, whether it is schtick or not), I was treated to exaggerated eye rolling and flips of the wrist... Like: You are going to double/redouble ME, in THIS position??? Puhleeeeeeeeeeze(!) To the point that I told him to knock it off because it was a distraction, and I felt the position deserved some deliberation. That seemed to do the trick and he stopped. But he has always sent over his cubes to me with "attitude", anyway I suppose it is all gamesmanship and maybe people are offended by the way I do it too?
Anyway, to me it seems less sophisticated to double with attitude and LESS dangerous as a result. Silent but deadly is a pretty good image to cultivate, and it seems more polite to me.
Everyone tries to gain the upperhand psychologically I guess, and I have devoted a lot of thought to this area of the game. It is interesting to see the different manifestations and techniques!
