Vegas Super Jackpot Entry Round

In Response To: Vegas Super Jackpot Entry Round (Stick)

I have been under that delusion for some time! Also, I had a discussion with Nack Ballard on this very subject one time when I used to still enter in the "qualifying" rounds... He said simply: "It depends on the advantage you think you have... you can figure it out with a pencil, it is better to enter at the higher entry fee".

I don't argue the reply to the opening roll with Stick.

No sense arguing high stakes backgammon with Nack.

I don't piss into the wind.

I always enter at the highest entry fee... Here are a few benefits:

1. You cash twice as often!

2. You don't play late on Thursday night, and be tired for Friday's action.

3. You don't EVER draw Steve Sax, Drew Giovannis, Petko, and any other pro who believes he does better saving half an entry fee.

4. A field of 16 is easier to beat than a field of 32

5. Your reputation grows as a result of your name reaching the results page more, which in turn can earn you some perks at subsequent tournaments from players who have duly noted that you "always" cash.

6. You end up with more trophies.

7. You can hedge after winning ONE match, if you want.

8. It is a satisfying feeling to play for the HIGHEST stakes available

9. You develop a rep as someone who will put his money where his mouth is.

10. It is WAY more exciting to play for high stakes! It is the ultimate!

Of these things, probably the best are 10 and 2 and 7. A week long tournament in Vegas is a grind. A marathon of backgammon. Your focus is high at the higher entry fee, because it is exceptional. You need your rest, and if you are going to play at your highest level, NOT having to fight through the round of 32 against another pro provides you valuable rest.

Assuming you lose in the round of 32, you are now starting in a losing mode when the ABT tournament starts the next morning. If it was a bad beat, you may have gotten little, or restless, sleep the night before.

Save up for Vegas, and take your best shot at the higher entry fee. I know I have never regretted it
