"What is happening here is that you are ignoring the ROI of 0% on the $1,000 not invested in an entry fee. Entering the round of 16 puts this money to work in a profitable venture too, albeit at a lower ROI than the first $1,000."

As an extreme example showing this idea suppose there was no rake and in the first round you are 51% to win. But in the subsequent rounds you are 100% to win. Which gives the greater ROI?
