By staying back you allow hitting 4s, which dont actually cover the blot on the acepoint. Thus allowing all 4s to be useful numbers, which is a total of 15 numbers. If its just 1s, then its only 11 hitting numbers, of which only 7 cover the ace as well.
A race lead is still a race lead - it may be slender (4 technical pips), but isnt that enough to make it a racing play?
I really dont know the correct play here - I know that I would play 2 from the 16pt. Then again, I am not playing in the semi's at the midwests, I am sitting in front of the computer looking at a backgammon position. So I am perhaps not giving it enough thought - or indeed my technique is all wrong, and I am seeking to learn why.
Common enough class of position, I should know how to play this. I look forward to the dirty 2ply I'm about to do on my gnu!
