Adam: I'm surprised if you don't think you're "about" as good as Steve. "About" embraces a pretty wide latitude. Steve is as good as they come, but what is the difference between him and another top pro?
Steve hasn't got a job like Neil, or MCG. Steve lives in fear of any kind of swing. That is why he actively hedges 5% of his action two rounds before the money. He makes settlements all the time and he can be pushed around a little bit with the cube because he avoids volatility like the plague. He is an expert with the checkers and a pretty good writer, but he talks himself out of some takes and perhaps misses a double or two in an effort to "manage the volatility".
You don't want to get him in the first round of the next tournament, but there is a pretty good chance he won't be there unless flights are cheap. Neil is going to be there anyway, and he is not under any money pressure in Backgammon compared to his stock market career....... That makes a BIG difference.
