My studies with the bot indicate it is routine, in general, to hit loose off the ace point instead of bearing off the additional checker. Yet, I keep seeing great players, (like Petko), just rip off checkers!
Had a big argument with a guy online who took one off and left me 2 extra shots, and of course I would have hit him if he made the "right" play instead. The game goes in streaks like that. I am interested in the answer to this problem... But I would play 3/off, 3/1* to force a one roll solution on the subject of contact.
However on second thought... 322 is better than 222 distribution, probably enough to make it right for White to leave if he can when he misses. There won't be any 2 blot sequences from 322, and just as many backgammons as 222. So perhaps it is better to take advantage of those who stick around for this shot? This is a neat problem!
It looks like an exception to the rule to me now.
