In GCB-5, Petko has a three and three to play. He thought about this for a long time before making the bold "5(2)-18(2)". I liked his play as well as Dana Nazarian who had previously defeated Ray Fogerlund in the 1st round.

It's a tough decision, but according to Snowie, making the safe play of "18(3)-3" is the correct play. The gain of making the safe play, is that you can't get pointed on by Green's four builders, but the drawback is that Green will be improving his position while White is trying to bring his pieces around the board.

The general consensus among the players was that, making your valuable five-point made it so much easier to win the game on all fronts. You added a fourth point in your board, and simultaneously make Green move his pieces with just a bit of extra caution.

One possible explanation why the safe play might be better, is that Green has two blots to clean up. If you make the big play of coming out to the 18 point with two checkers, Green has the opportunity to point on White's straggler on the 21 point.
