Well everybody, the gist seems to be that he should have just played on to crush and possibly gammon me, but by giving me the cube he allowed me to redouble and go for broke, with better chances of winning that game and thus the match, than my chances of playing and winning the next four in a row.

However, if I found myself in that situation again, I wonder if I would be able to tell the difference between "time to go for broke" vs. a sure loss, which is what it looked like to me. thanks for your collective input.
