This is the argument I hate.

I don't think the argument you hate is the one I actually made.

You're right, I shouldn't have painted it this way. Here's the argument I hate: Clocks are not the perfect solution, therefore, we should not use them.

Having those feelings about both (a) time scrambles and (b) unreasonably long matches does not constitute trying to "have it both ways".

Alright, then let me be more clear. You can hate time scrambles and you can hate slow play, and there's nothing wrong with that. What bothers me is tournament directors who are bothered by slow play but don't want to give clocks a chance to succeed. If a tournament director tells me that slow play is a plague on the game but in the same breath says, "Clocks? No thanks." then I'll just think they're being a stick in the mud.
