I think you may believe that any time you use more than your 12-second delay that you are playing too slowly. Using your reserve time is normal and expected; there is no sin in using more than 12-seconds per move. After 20-30 2/12 matches, it's clear to me, from my results as well as my opponent's, that this is more than sufficient to play any match without undue time pressure.
