In Response To: We don't agree..I am sorry (Coolrey)

Ray: I have to ask you to send me a match of mine you recorded? Nobody else needed to be asked, Roderick sir. You've had my address for some time actually. You emailed comments on one of my articles thru CJC, remember?

I just let people record em if they want to, I try to get along. It is just kind of weak if they make no effort to share the information later, I put up with the bulky camera, their dice, their board, at their convenience. Malcolm Davis, Bill Riles, Neil Garvie, Gregg Cattanach... all sent matches without a request, so that is the normal ettiquitte I have come to expect.

Rod: I happen to work a shitload. If something happened weeks ago (the match, at the time I emailed you), I wasn't thinking about the match. You never asked for it subsequently or I would have sent it then (I'm away until after Vegas now). Don't not ask for it and then bitch in a public forum that I never sent it to you. Try sending an email. I think we've established that you had mine.

As far as etiquette.... you're an elder statesman of backgammmon. Try acting like one. Before this year, I had been at 7 tournaments over 5 years. Maybe I didn't know all of the etiquette. Instead of calling someone out publicly, perhaps you should be taking the time to speak with them. (I set up a club in NYC so I could help people improve their game - I take time with people who want it.)

Ray: You had no clock with Frank as far as I know, you didn't request one with me, so you don't always ask for the device that eliminates problems... and when there isn't one you do stuff that provokes old pros like us to roll the dice, and then you act all shocked and offended.

Rod: First, not having a clock is not correlated with not asking to use a clock. Second, 7 point matches? Come on, Ray.

Ray: Then you posted here that David was picking up the dice before you hit the clock, which to my way of thinking was disrespectful to him.

Rod: I was chiming in on the argument. David knew it was true. No disrespect. FACT. David will tell you he was doing it. It was not meant as anything other than support for Neil's argument. Time runs low and people do things they shouldn't be doing.

Ray: I also didn't say you ought to pay for recording the match I think I said it wouldn't be too obtuse if I asked you to, but I didn't.

Rod: No! After the match in Charlotte, you said you should be charging me to record matches with you. Not that watered down let's-try-not-sound-as-bad-as-I-had. You also told me Sunday that you were upset that I didn't offer you odds on a hedge for our Sunday semi-finals masters match and that I should have out of respect. Respect for what... bashing me whenever you can? I won't even touch the other aspects of that statement of yours. If you want the respect and elder statesman should get, ACT LIKE ONE.

Ray: On another front: Neither you or Neil gave Rob a dime for recording and entering your match... and maybe I am out of line here; but even if they ask me to record it... When I am making four figures I give the guy a tip, at least! And, I explain to my opponent that it wouldn't be a bad idea if the winner paid maybe 40 and the loser 20 or something like that. Seems sort of selfish to split up over $5000 and stiff a guy who offers to do you a favor, to me. We all know how much work that is, and I for one do NOT want to do it.

I am not surprised that you didn't tip Rob, really... But I don't understand Neil not doing it, to be honest with you.

Rod: Well, there it is. First, if a guy like Neil doesn't do something how should I know to do it? Second, neither of us asked Rob - he volunteered. I set up my club in NYC. I don't ask people to pay me. By the time it's all said and done, I spent about a grand over the past year on it out of pocket. When I volunteer I guess I mean it. Maybe you don't. I know I'll be careful about accepting any offers from you, Ray. But I guess that a guy who's been around for 30 years keeps knocking a newcomer, you've gotta wonder anyway.
