Slotting doesn't feel right. It makes everything a target while we are out-boarded. There's no strong duplication to take advantage of, and, if we get away with it, our own 3s are duplicated to cover the 21 and 5 points. It's a "catch up" play that isn't likely to work.
B/16 and b/21 13/8 are more thematic. Stick has an advantage at blocking and attacking, so it makes sense for us to steer toward racing or holding. But b/16 runs into a double shot, and leaves us behind in the race even when we're missed, and we may not be able to tidy up next turn.
b/21 13/8 feels a bit unbalanced, but it limits White's attack to a fly shot or attacking in his home board. The problem is that it leaves White a lot of ways to attack and improve his board at the same time, which could lead to a quick and uncomfortable cube.
b/21 13/8 is my reflex play, but I've talked myself into slotting. My thinking is that Stick is happy to leave his rear checkers alone and go to work attacking and/or blocking on his side of the board. By slotting, we leave him chasing two rabbits. This may lead to tougher choices, which may allow us some wiggle room to establish something on one side of the board or the other.
