Ray did enter round of 16. However there was a mixup and Alan Grunwald who had preregistered showed up to find the event full and himself not in it. Howard then went looking for volunteers amongst round of 16 entrants to start in round of 32 to enable Alan to play. Ray was the nice guy to agree.
