First off, don't describe yourself as an intermediate anymore Adam. Your command of the english language is enough to get you out of that category...
nevermind that you have the great Richard Munitz by the balls in every one of your posts.
Fear is an emotion that has to be dealt with in backgammon. The tendency is to become paralyzed by it, but your goal should be to play with "controlled" fear.
As for this position, it looks like you quite correctly, and expertly, were playing for an undoubled G when unfortunately you left this double shot.
Richard may be able to double this because he has little to lose... Noting that he will often get gammoned when he misses the shot, and even if he doesn't he is only risking his 15% MWC from 2-6*/7.
As the leader you should learn to EMBRACE, (as in welcome), these "opportunities"... Note the lack of fear in these phrases, the optimism they contain... Because the hardest thing to do as the leader in a match is to determine the exactly correct doubling points... because your opponent gets to take advantage of cube leverage.
Sooooooooooooooo, the neatest thing you can have happen is for him to sacrifice ALL cube leverage by putting the match winning points on the line for you when he has a rather high failure rate.
This is the case here. This glass is half full. From your standpoint this should not be considered a good opprotunity for him to hit and beat you... You should look at it as a GREAT opportunity for him to miss and LOSE. Now you won't have to win a gammon, you just have to win. He will miss 45% of the time, unless it is me and then it is more like 85%.
Don't worry, be HAPPY!
Double, TAKE!!!!!!
