I can't speak for the open/championship division, but in the intermediate division, all players will be making frequent cube mistakes. As a result, you can double when you're somewhat TG and get a fair amount of takes, and you can wait a roll or two on what's technically a double and get a D/T when it's a D/P. There might be situations where an inferior checker play is correct against an intermediate player, but I can't think of any, and I would suggest just making what you believe to be the best checker play. (My guess is that in the open/championship division you shouldn't consider a sub-optimal play unless you're a Giant or near-Giant playing someone who seems to have registered in the wrong division.)
